Most songs have a life cycle: a spike, a peak, a slow fade. "Blinding Lights" ignored it. Released in November 2019, The Weeknd's synth-driven single is now the most-streamed song in Spotify's history — and the gap between it and everything else keeps growing.
A record that kept getting broken
The milestones tell the story better than any single number. In January 2023, "Blinding Lights" edged past Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You" to become Spotify's most-streamed track of all time — at that moment by the narrowest of margins, roughly 3.335 billion streams against 3.333 billion. In January 2024 it became the first song ever to reach four billion streams. And on 31 August 2025 it became the first song to pass five billion.
By the data behind our video, the song now sits at around 5.6 billion streams.

How far ahead is it?
Look at the chart. "Shape of You" — the song it dethroned — sits at about 5.1 billion. Sweater Weather by The Neighbourhood is at 4.8 billion, Starboy (another Weeknd track) at 4.7 billion, and Harry Styles's "As It Was" at 4.6 billion. In a list where the difference between second and fifth is about half a billion, the top spot is a further half billion ahead of second place. In other words, the lead over the runner-up is bigger than what separates the runner-up from fifth place.
The Weeknd himself holds 28 songs in Spotify's "Billions Club", more than any other artist.
Not just a streaming story
The song's staying power showed up well beyond one platform. It spent four weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and became the first song to stay in the top ten for an entire year. In November 2021 it took the top spot on Billboard's Greatest of All Time Hot 100 list, passing Chubby Checker's "The Twist" — a song from 1960. It was co-produced with Max Martin, Oscar Holter, Belly and DaHeala, and it sits on his 2020 album After Hours.
Why this one, and why so long?
Streaming favours songs that work in the background: workouts, road trips, playlists, TikTok clips. An 80s-flavoured synth-pop track with a driving tempo and an instantly recognisable hook fits almost every one of those contexts. It is also a song that plays well in a "shuffle" of very different music, which helps it survive on curated playlists for years instead of months.
It also arrived at the right time. Release in late 2019, then a global lockdown in 2020 that put millions of people on headphones at home — a year in which streaming numbers swelled anyway. The song's momentum simply never dropped afterwards.
"I'm glad 'Blinding Lights' happened when it happened as opposed to it being the first single I've ever dropped." — The Weeknd
What the number really means
Five billion streams is not five billion listeners. Spotify counts a stream when a song is played for 30 seconds or more, so a single fan replaying it across years adds up. The point is not fan count but repeat behaviour: it is a song people keep choosing, year after year, over the millions of newer tracks pushed at them each week. That — not the raw number — is the achievement.
